Memo Reflection

When creating my Memo to President Vincent Boudreau, I had to make sure to keep it very professional and well formatted. Since both a letter and memo may seem similar, they do vary in many ways. The introductions are very distinct and the endings as well. You don’t have to add a signature for a memo and you must add a phone number as well to be contacted. The reason that motivated me to write this memo to the president of CCNY was an issue that I saw that needed to be resolved as soon as possible. I and my peers grew with many concerns about the conditions about the Mahoney Pool since it has been open to the public in many years. Although it is taking up a lot of space at CCNY, no students are able to enjoy it. Due to the fact that I enjoyed swimming at my highs school, I felt the need to bring to the spotlight the damaged pool.

During the process of finishing my memo, I really wanted to accomplish my goal of raising awareness about the pool and having it repaired. The only way that my goal was going to be achieved was if I caught the attention of President Boudreau and set up a meeting with him. In addition, I also knew that most of the students at CCNY aren’t aware that our school has a swimming facility; therefore I wanted to bring the issue to the public and hopefully inspire students who enjoy swimming like me to create change. The audience is to the president of CCNY a high ranked official who make sure school projects and funds are passed. Also, the audience includes students who attend CCNY.

Although the issue can be resolved, there is an issue between when and how. Since the school has a budget for the year, it must carefully fund and cut programs or services at CCNY. Therefore, even if President Boudreau wanted to repair the pool, there wouldn’t be the available economic resources to do it. That is when time also comes into the picture because the pool has been closed since 2013 and to get it repaired would take a year. The relationship between me, the audience and the medium is that it’s for the better of the campus at CCNY and would be enjoyed by thousands. Writing this memo has really helped me achieve the course learning outcome due to the fact that I gained the knowledge of writing in a professional manner. Therefore, writing a memo would make me stand out compared to other student’s complaints.
